Doug asked:

I have a question about Mark 12:17. Are we justified in paying taxes that are going to be put toward Obamacare?

Patrick Madrid replied:

"We are obligated to pay taxes that much is certain. We are not responsible for the things that are done in the name of the people ... the United States ... the people who are responsible would be the law makers, the judges and those who have some direct control over that. We do have to pay our taxes and even though we know that some of our tax money may be used for something that is illicit, nonetheless it doesn't exonerate us or alleviate that burden that we have to pay taxes.

And I'm not speaking of a burden that is simply civic in nature, but our duty before God to pay taxes ... No we are not responsible for at least not in any direct sense, at least for the malfeasance that sometimes takes place when our tax money is used for something evil ...

I don't say what I say for fear of the government, not at all. This is simply what the holy bible teaches. Jesus teaches this. Saint Paul teaches this. The long standing teaching of the Catholic church is that we are obligated as citizens to pay our taxes. We're not obligated to do anything that is ... evil. So if the government said you have to kill so and so, or you have to perform an abortion, we're not obligated to do that..."

17 Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were amazed at him.
